Got bored. Started playfully trash talking college football some mates on Twitter. Came across the following Clemson football facts…

• Clemson is 1-0 against the Charlotte YMCA in football. Before anyone starts talking about us playing cupcakes, be mindful that this game took place in 1897.
• Clemson is 3-12 against Alabama. Our last win against the Crimson Tide was in 1905. My grandmother was 4 years away from being born at the time.
• Ohio State have only met once on the gridiron; the 1978 Gator Bowl. Clemson won 17-15 in a game that saw legendary coach Woody Hayes assault a Clemson player. Hayes was fired by Ohio State the next day.
• Clemson has gone undefeated AND untied twice, once in 1948 and again in 1981. 1981 was the year that the Tigers won the National Championship.
• Clemson’s all-time record is 658-448-45. The Tigers’ all-time winning percentage (59.1%) is 25th in the nation.
• Schools Clemson has the most wins against? North Carolina State (51), Wake Forest (58), and South Carolina (65). Schools Clemson has the most losses against? Georgia Tech (50), Georgia (41), and South Carolina (40).

Duke plays Florida State today in the ACC Tournament Semifinals. That’s as good of an excuse as any to head to Durham. Basketball, burgers, and freshly brewed beer? Sounds like my type of afternoon.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IMAGES OF THE YEAR.

When someone tells me “I don’t like college football,” they’re basically telling me, “I don’t like football.”

The state of North Carolina is a great place to live in whenever UNC loses.

It’s even better place to be when they lose to Duke or NC State.

Just checked ESPN’s National Signing Day rankings. As of 2pm, ESPN has Clemson ranked 7th in the nation in regards to incoming class talent and potential. That’s great to see coming off of last year’s 8th place ranking. We played a lot of freshmen this past season. If those guys continue to progress and develop like they should and if this year’s class is half as good as they were, I foresee more good days ahead for the Clemson faithful.

Not to be overlooked - South Carolina has a strong class at #15. Even though I prefer when they’re awful, it’s good for the state to have two good football programs.

One more for the good guys.

I find it really interesting how people react when one of their heroes is accused of less than heroic behavior. In the case of Paterno, he allegedly knew of Sandusky’s pervy escapades with young boys, yet chose to do nothing significant about it. 

The cognitive dissonance in such cases makes people act all weird, and say odd things. “Well, he didn’t do the molesting and he was a great coach” is my favorite.

A great coach who chose protecting the revenues of the Penn State football program over innocent children.

A greater coach would have taken more significant, public action to keep Sandusky as far away from children as possible. No one would have faulted him for doing so, and the football program would have been just fine. People tend to rally around those who protect children from molestation and abuse.

If you disagree, imagine one of your kids or a kid you love as one of those molested. Hearing “Paterno was a great coach” brings out a whole different set of emotions.

Paterno might have been a great coach, but he could have been much, much greater.

MIAMI (AP) — Say this for Clemson: When the Tigers go to the Orange Bowl, they put on an unforgettable show.

National champions, 30 years ago.

Simply embarrassed, this time around.

Clemson allowed 35 points in the second quarter alone, on the way to allowing the most points given up in any bowl game ever played — a 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl on Wednesday night. It was the second-most points allowed by any Clemson team ever, topped only by the 74 posted by Alabama on Nov. 14, 1931.

So it wasn’t the worst game Clemson ever played. It only looked that way.
