If you let the princess go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will jump on your head.

Mario Kart 7 Update Available Now
Nintendo has officially announced that they have made an update for Mario Kart 7 which will patch up the shortcut glitches when playing online on these courses:
Wuhu Mountain Loop
Wuhu Island Loop
GBA Bowser Castle 1
This update is available for free via Nintendo eShop now. If you haven’t dowownloaded this update you will no longer be able to play online multiplayer in Mario Kart 7.
It took awhile but I think it was worth the wait (:

Talk about breathing a second life into Mario Kart 7. I played online tonight and all of rooms and communities were full. Glad to see that Nintendo learned from Mario Kart DS just how much cheaters can ruin a quality online experience. With this patch in place, I’m looking forward to spending more time on the track.

“Kid Icarus: Downsizing,” by jmatchead. This “demake” piece reimagines Kid Icarus: Uprising as an SNES game built on HAL Labs’ Hyper Zone engine. Looks cool, but without a second screen and a larger-capacity storage format, you wouldn’t be able to have constant conversations and jokes going on while you play.
You’d be limited to pop-up talking heads spouting single, badly compressed lines oh my god it would be Star Fox.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is the combination of two of my most favorite Nintendo series - Sin & Punishment and Star Fox. After seeing what Sakurai and team did with Uprising, I have high hopes for all three franchises moving forward.

Things are not nearly as bad for Nintendo as they are for Sony, but this is obviously not good:

Nintendo will report on Thursday its first ever operating loss, after estimating a 45 billion yen deficit for the business year just ended.

I will always have a soft spot for Nintendo. In my opinion, they have by far the best game IP ever created. It’s not even close. And that’s why, as much as it pains me to say it, I think Nintendo will eventually have to head down the Sega path and move on from hardware to focus solely on software.

It’s well known that Mario/Zelda/etc creator Shigeru Miyamoto has no intention of letting this happen — like Apple, he strives to set the entire user experience through hardware and software — but it’s hard to see Nintendo focusing on gaming hardware and continuing on. Maybe they pull and Apple and fully reinvent the company, but there’s a reason why such transformations don’t happen often.

On the flipside, maybe I’m letting my dreams blind me a bit. I really, really, really want Mario and Zelda and Donkey Kong and all the other great Nintendo properties on iOS devices.

The grown-up in me who understands why a move like this would potentially have to be made, wouldn’t be happy about this decision, but would eventually come to terms with it.

The kid in me who still believes in “The Nintendo Difference” and owns every Nintendo system, would be more than a little bit upset. The idea of playing Super Mario Galaxy 4 on a “set top box” or Pokemon Graphite on the iPhone 5 disgusts him a little. There’s magic in Nintendo’s consoles. If they go the 3rd party route, a little bit of that magic dies.

First look at New Super Mario Bros. 2 for Nintendo 3DS, releasing in Japan, Europe, and North America this August!

Quick thoughts:

  • Raccoon Suit return confirmed!
  • Why is this game called New Super Mario Bros. 2 and not New Super Mario Bros. 3? Last time I checked, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was a thing.
  • It looks like an interesting mashup of SMB3, SMW, and NSMB. I’m interested.
  • Will it be as “non-gamer friendly” as Super Mario 3D Land? ArcadiaTiger really enjoyed SM3DL b/c she could actually progress in it. Both NSMB titles weren’t as accessible for her.
  • What’s up with all of the gold?
  • August? Wow, that’s like…4 months away! Not too bad of a wait.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 has a trailer. Wasn’t somebody telling me that this will never happen? Bryan, was that you?

If this were a retail release, I would buy it for the cover art alone.

Video Games

I’m a gamer. I prefer gaming on Nintendo systems, but I’ve had no qualms gaming on machines made by Atari, SEGA, Sony, Microsoft, and Panasonic. I even get down with PC gaming from time to time.

Favorite game of all-time? Street Fighter II - all variations. That series was the one that got me hooked on gaming. Before it was just an occasional hobby.

Favorite gaming character? Fox McCloud. Link from the Legend of Zelda series comes in at a close second?

Favorite gaming moment? That time I was named Store Champion at my local Blockbuster Video during the 1995 World Videogame Championships. Having a year’s worth a free rentals was the shit.

That Fox one is awesome. The Falco one is pretty sweet too.

Sorry the image is a little funky today. It’s not always easy to get DS screens that look decent.
As I’ve mentioned previously, Elite Beat Agents is one of, if not the, most underrated game of all time. Not only is it a blast to play but it’s one of the quirkiest and most fun video games ever made with each stage telling a different, wacky story. Whether you’re a cat making sure a baby doesn’t get lost on a construction site or an oil tycoon discovering ancient civilizations trying to strike it rich again, the series has a wonderful sense of humor. However, perhaps the best part of the game is the one with the least sense of humor. The stage based on the song “You’re the Inspiration” by Chicago follows a young girl who sadly lost her father in an accident. The story is all about the little girl and her mother just wanting to see him and spend time with him one last time, specifically on Christmas. So the Elite Beat Agents come in to help cheer the girl and her mother up but this time without any ridiculous dances or over the top songs, they sort of just sway back and forth and move very subtly. Of course, they get to see the ghost of their father/husband in the end. It’s one of the sweetest moments in any video game, in my opinion, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that you don’t see it coming based on the rest of the game. Definitely one of my favorite gaming moments of all time.

I’d pay money for this. Who wouldn’t love a MIDI rendition of Mark Henry’s theme?
